Mahāsī Sayādaw

Mahāsī Sayādaw is an important teacher in the modern insight meditation tradition. He deeply influenced how Buddhism and meditation are taught in the West, popularizing practices like noting/labeling, working the the breath in the abdomen, and making meditation accessible to laypeople. His style is considered to be fairly rigorous and intensive.

With students such as Sayadaw U Pandita, Munindra, Dipa Ma, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, and Sharon Salzberg, many of the methods we use in insight meditation in the West ultimately come from Mahāsī Sayādaw.
